Staff Accountant, The Vermont Country Store

Position:  Staff Accountant 

Reports to: Head of Finance 

Classification:   Full time - Salary  

Location:  Manchester 

Major Purpose: 

The Staff Accountant develops and administers accounting practices throughout the organization to ensure operating and financial statements that reflect the condition of the business.  In addition, this position will provide assistance and training in accounts payable, payroll and accounts receivable as dictated by department needs and goals.

Major Responsibilities: 

  • Perform broad and varied general accounting assignments including the supervision of many general ledger sections within the Finance department ( i.e. general ledger, payroll, fringe benefits, etc.).
  • Ensure the correct administration of payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable and all entries to the general ledger.  Review entries and documentation as required.
  • Assist in training the finance staff according to generally accepted accounting standards and principles. 
  • Demonstrate leadership through the promotion of department goals and standards by taking a collaborative role with key partners.
  • Responsible for the timely preparation of accurate monthly and quarterly financial statements including consistent month end and quarterly closing schedules.
  • Actively participate as a team with the other Accounting Manger and Supervisor in financial statement preparation.  This would include working with Directors and Head’s to assist them in the budgeting process and on-going department analysis. 
  • Analyze financial information and work with management in an effort to improve the overall company performance.
  • Build strong relationships with external partners and vendors.
  • Maintain accounts payable best practices and accounting software updates.  Understand updates and new releases on budgeting software and train department users accordingly. Participate in software evaluation as necessary.
  • Provide public accountants with records for all year-end and interim audits including but not limited to the general audit, profit sharing audit and workers compensation.
  • Optimize resources to deliver the highest quality customer service while continually improving to achieve operational efficiency and cost effectiveness.
  • Assist with the following: auditing of physical inventories or cycle counting; providing financial information useful to management; financial analysis as required; performing operational audits of internal controls; and compliance work on all payroll and related benefits administration.
  • Supervise full-time, part-time or seasonal accounting staff and others as required.

Additional Requirements: 

  • Education equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in finance, management or business.
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of previous accounting experience. Proficiency in accounting concepts, standards, and principles.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Office.
  • Display the ability to maintain confidential and proprietary information under all circumstances. 
  • Possess strong project management skills with proven follow-up and completion experience. 
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills with the ability to develop solid working relationships with many individuals. 
  • Demonstrate the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple requests simultaneously.  
  • Display strong listening, evaluating and organizational skills.
