The Graphic Designer, E-Commerce is responsible for executing tactical graphic design and presentation adjustments to the Orvis website on a daily basis, working in concert with the Art Director, e-Commerce and Web Merchant Analysts to achieve the strategic goals outlined in the Web Merchandising initiative. Accordingly, this graphic designer must produce brand-right creative content for the Orvis website that will measurably improve Sales Per Visit. In the process, he/she must satisfy the needs of merchandising and marketing management in presenting the most effective offering to our customers, while also conveying Orvis Brand DNA, DCL and Sporting Traditions, and supporting Sales Activism in all creative output. Activities include: design; selection of images; art direction and/or sourcing of original photography when necessary; meeting established creative/production budgets and schedules.

Company Interfaces

Reports to the Art Director, e-Commerce. Interfaces internally with the Director of Advertising; Head of e-Commerce Marketing;  Web Merchant Analysts; Sales Activists (copywriters); Web Content Manager; web production and content teams; the e-commerce marketing team; web technical support; and stock photo procurement. Works externally with applicable vendors.

Key Performance Measurements

Financial KPM. In order to influence top line growth in web commerce, design and implement compelling improvements to Orvis.com that will generate a measurable increase in Sales Per Visit (SPV) over prior year.

Quality/Service KPM. Track and establish benchmark in year one of “hit rate” for website modifications, based on number of modifications that generate positive increase in SPV divided by total changes made. 

General Responsibilities

  • Work on daily basis with Art Director, e-Commerce to assess and manage creative workload together.
  • Work closely with E-commerce Merchant Analysts to design and produce presentation enhancements on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis to primary public view pages: Home page, Shop pages, and promotional banners on the fly. 
  • Work with the Merchant Analysts to understand performance from various styles/types of presentations and adapt website design based on what we learn.
  • Develop strong understanding and practical application of the Orvis Brand DNA, Distinctive Country Living and Sporting Traditions.
  • Develop strong understanding of Sales Activism principles and how design can play an effective role in achieving them.
  • Responsible to keep creative work consistent with the Orvis brand, while achieving the needs for the business to adapt, change and improve Salesmanship methodologies on the web.
  • Creative utilization of existing visual elements and creative assets from other channels
  • Provide lifestyle and brand images for assigned work to keep the site fresh and relevant, with particular emphasis on use of the Orvis image bank.
  • Manage color palette and color usage throughout site consistent with Orvis brand and quality standards.
  • Sense of urgency and quick turnaround time is essential.
  • Respond to constructive, critical feedback with prompt revision.
  • Multi task daily to handle changing priorities as the day progresses.
  • Communicate clearly and efficiently via verbal and e-mail.
  • Work with technical web designers to develop new functions, navigation and features as necessary to achieve strategic and sales goals.

Qualifications

A high level of creativity, responsibility, and energy are requisites.  Must possess a sense of urgency and organization with strict attention to deadlines. A positive and friendly attitude and the ability to work productively with a variety of personalities, sometimes under intense situations, are necessary. Must have excellent computer design skills and proficiency in InDesign, PhotoShop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, and Flash software programs. A working knowledge of the Internet is a must, and the ability to cross platforms between Macs and PCs. Must be able to negotiate while avoiding adversarial relationships. An understanding of and identification with our brand, lifestyle and customer profile are critical. Desired qualifications include prior experience in “consumer-direct” e-commerce design and an understanding of HTML. A degree in commercial or fine art preferred or equivalent experience.
